The Extraordinary Jeremy Corbyn

Mordechai is delighted to know that old fashioned Marxism is alive and well in Britain.

The election of Jeremy Corbyn as the Labour Party’s Paramount Leader heralds an important return to the political debate of the 1950s. Forget the matters of the moment – climate change; the imploding Middle East; globalisation; the continuing EU economic and political crises; the volatility of crypto-capitalist Communist China; Sino-Japanese tensions etc. – and roll back the years to all the old familiar chestnuts of unilateral disarmament; the end of NATO; nationalisation; the abolition of the monarchy and more power to the workers. All great whimsical stuff!

Standard Labour party dress will now be turtle necks and collar and stud shirts; Sloppy Joes; baggy corduroy trousers; braces and suede desert boots. Obligatory reading for party members will be Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir and the party’s poetic muses will be Ginsberg and Yevtushenko!! Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose!!

By re-engaging with the political debate of the ‘Fifties, the Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition amply demonstrates that he has taken to heart the immortal words of Conservative Prime Minster Harold Macmillan in 1957: "most of our people have never had it so good".  What a glorious year!

Mordechai delights and identifies in such eccentricity. Here is a man well out of his times. A man prepared to bark at the moon and pee into the wind. Such a veritable class warrior will inevitably inject much needed entertainment into Britain’s political milieu as he drags his party ever closer to the abyss. Indeed, in the tradition of Screaming Lord Sutch and the Monster Raving Loony Party, Corbyn stands proud and tall – a monument to Britain’s political jocularity and mischievousness.

There is however, in Corbyn’s Gladstone bag of political tom-foolery, one serious and long neglected agenda item dear to Mordechai’s heart – the abolition of nuclear weapons.

If Corbyn can raise this one, singular and critical question to the forefront of political debate this political trog and beat generation incarnate will have done his country and the world a great service!
